The deal was possible in spite of the hiring freeze due to the coronavirus pandemic, EV Zug emphasizes in their press release. They will only have to pay for food and accommodation. Both teams agree that it will be favorable to Ryan McLeod's development if he can gain some experience in Switzerland's top league.

Ryan McLeod was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers as 40th overall-pick in the 2018 Entry Draft. His entry level deal with the Canadian team is valid until 2022. The Oilers can recall him at any time if they wish to do so.

Last season, the Canadian appeared in 56 games for the Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers' AHL-affiliate. Over the course of the season, he put up 23 points (five goals).
