Following his retirement in 2018, John Gobbi first held the role of Chief Financial Officier (CFO) as head of administration and finances for Lausanne HC. After a while, Gobbi was offered the job of head of the youth department, which he left in March 2021 after a couple of months.

In the club's press release, president Hubert Waeber says that Gobbi was a perfect candidate: "I am very satisfied to have been able to quickly find a person whose competencies perfectly match our expectations".

For his part, John Gobbi expresses his gratitude to his new employer: "I'm grateful to the management for having chosen me from among many very good candidates and I am looking forward to joining a very well structured club with a superb infrastructure and an ambitious team".

As revealed by Blick, HC Fribourg-Gottéron had also approached Christian Hofstetter, a former captain of the club and now Sport Director with the IIHF. However, a deal could not be reached.
