Akira Schmid was drafted by the Devils in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The former SCL Tigers' goaltender went overseas for the 2018-19 season, in which he played for three different teams.

Schmid will now join the Ohama Lancers (USHL), the team he has been part of since November 2018. Last season, he appeared in 37 games for them, posting a .926 save percentage.
