Spengler Cup

The prestigious tournament would not be financially feasible for the HC Davos under those conditions.

Will the trophy be hoisted this season?

"If only 1000 spectators were allowed to attend the games, we would have to seriously discuss canceling the tournament. In that case, the costs would possibly be greater than the income," HCD's president Gaudenz Domenig tells the Südostschweiz.

But the attendance limit is not the only hurdle the tournament will potentially have to overcome. If the teams from abroad will have to go into quarantine in order to play in the tournament, they will - in all likeliness - not attend.

If the worst case - a cancellation - cannot be avoided, HC Davos would also have to deal with an additional financial loss, as insurance would not cover a cancellation. HC Davos will have to decide until autumn whether the tournament will take place or not.

As for the extension of the 1,000 spectators limit itself, Domenig, SC Bern's CEO Marc Lüthi, EHC Biel's CEO Daniel Villard, and Director of National League and Swiss League Denis Vaucher all share the same opinion (published in Blick): an extension without a possibility to have more spectators given a proper concept would likely mean the end of many clubs.
