Janick Schwendener and HC Thurgau agreed to dissolve their agreement in May 2020. The deal would have run through the 2020-21 season. In Germany, he will not count against their import player contingent as he is in possession of German passport.
During the offseason, the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers allowed him to practice with their team so he could keep in shape until he would find a new team.
Schwendener played the past three seasons for HC Thurgau. In 26 regular-season games, he posted a .917 save percentage.
