His general manager Ray Shero is glad to have found an agreement with the young forward so soon, as he considers the first-overall pick to be a fundamental piece of the Devils' lineup: "Nico is a special person who possesses a team-first mentality combined with an inner drive to succeed. The entire organization is thankful to him and his family for believing in our future."

As Nico Hischier reveals to the Tages-Anzeiger's Kristian Kapp, the Devils did not originally plan to announce the deal yesterday, but Shero decided a change of schedule after yesterday's practice session. The two parties started to negotiate the new deal before training camp: "It was my wish to sign the new deal during the season. The Devils were also open to that."

Asked about the figures of his contract, which will make him the top earner of the Swiss NHL players next season, Hischier only has this to say: "That does not mean anything to me. And you mustn't forget Roman Josi. He will sign his new contract. And he will have a higher number - otherwise, something will have gone wrong." Josi is also currently working on a contract extension with the Nashville Predators.
